Effective Communication in Relationships

As believers, we are called to love and serve one another, but effective communication is often the bridge that connects our intentions to meaningful relationships. In this article, we will explore the importance of communication in faith-based relationships and provide practical tips on how to build stronger, Christ-centred connections with others.

According to John Maxwell, communication is the most important skill. If you want to grow in your leadership, you have to grow in your communication. The good news is that you can learn to be a good communicator!

Observe How Effective Communicators Communicate

Good communicators learn from great communicators. Pay attention to how great communicators engage their audience, use body language, and convey their message. Study the strategies that great communicators use to connect with their audience and achieve their goals. By learning from great communicators, you can enhance your skills, become more effective, and inspire others through your own communication.

Prepare, prepare, prepare

You cannot deliver what you have not developed.

Always prepare to talk. Take detailed notes on any topics you might speak about someday. Find content in conversations, books, and podcasts. Prepare every day. Always listen for good illustrations, messages and notes.

A piece of advice that helped me was to read a good book twice. In the first time, go through and mark all the good bits. In the second time, simply read the marks.

Collaborate with Others

Some of your best thinking will be done with others. Collaborating with others enhances your creativity and encourages feedback from others. You can develop your communication skills, build stronger relationships, and achieve better outcomes.

Keep it Simple!

We need to go to where people are, and not make them come to where we are. Good communicators always take something complex and make it simple. Simple language and ideas are easier to understand, reducing confusion and misinterpretation.

Summary

Effective communication is a vital component for our relationships. By actively listening, speaking life, and being mindful of our body language, we can build stronger and more meaningful relationships with others. Let’s build bridges that connect us in love and service.

Think and Reflect:

  • How can I improve my active listening skills?
  • Who can I practice these tips with?

May our communication always be a reflection of God’s love and grace.

How To Trust God When Life Doesn’t Make Sense

Life is full of ups and downs, twists and turns. Sometimes, it feels like everything is falling into place, but other times, it seems like everything is falling apart. When faced with uncertainty, pain, or confusion, it is natural to question God’s plan and wonder if He’s still in control. However, we are called to trust God even when life doesn’t make sense.

The Bible says, “Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to Him, and He will make your paths straight” (Proverbs 3:5-6). However, how do we put this into practice?

1. Acknowledge Your Emotions

It is essential to recognise how you feel and be honest with God about your emotions. David writes in Psalm 13:1-2, “How long, Lord? Will you forget me forever? How long will you hide your face from me?” David’s raw emotions and pleas for help show us that it is totally fine to express our emotions to God.

    2. Seek God’s Presence

“Be still, and know that I am God” (Psalm 46:10). Take time to meditate, pray, and read the Bible. Focus on God’s character and promises, rather than your own circumstances.

    3. Remember God’s Faithfulness

Reflect on times when God has been faithful in your life or in the lives of others. “So whether you eat or drink or whatever you do, do it all for the glory of God” (1 Corinthians 10:31). Remembering God’s faithfulness builds our trust and confidence in His goodness.

    4. Surrender Control

“And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love Him, who have been called according to His purpose” (Romans 8:28). Trust that God is working everything out for your good.

    5. Find Comfort in God’s Promises

Hold onto God’s promises and truths, even when life doesn’t make sense. “Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go” (Joshua 1:9).

    Summary

Trusting God when life doesn’t make sense requires faith, patience, and perseverance on our part. Remember that God is always with you, even in the darkest of times. As you seek Him and surrender to His plan, He will guide you through every uncertainty and bring you out stronger on the other side.

“God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble” (Psalm 46:1).
